A-6E Colour Head-Down Display

This multifunction Colour Head Down Display was designed, built and commissioned by the Company Research Lab. (FARL). The unit is fitted with a Matsushita ruggedised delta shadowmask Cathode Ray Tube. The 5” by 5” CRT was installed in a rugged assembly with deflection coils by Brimar in the UK. With a screen pitch of 0.2mm the CHDD gives a high resolution and high contrast picture. There is a contrast enhancement filter and NVG compatibility is provided. A touch-screen option which can be used as a keyboard was offered but is not included on this example. Without hardware change the HDD can operate with 625/50 or 525/60 TV Line Standards.

Two of these displays were used in the Real Night trials programme on an A-6E Intruder aircraft. t

The use of the Matsushita tubes was unlikely for a production programme as the supplier could only offer the items for commercial programmes.
