In a cockpit of a transport aircraft there are two general areas in which a projection unit can be installed: the glareshield or the overhead area. The overhead area is generally preferred (the C-17 was a notable exception) but installation is bounded by the structure and pilot’s head clearance. In general, the space available reduces sharply going outboard and increases going inboard. Overhead switch panels and eyebrow windows often reduce the space available. Overhead Projection Units were developed by the Company for a HUD system in conjunction with Honeywell for the Gulfstream IV and V Business Jets. The system was known as the 2020 because of the obvious connection with good vision. The compact HUD 2020™ electro-optical overhead unit generates an image on a lightweight combiner that provides the pilot with head-up, real-time flight and aircraft performance data. The original Gulfstream IV HUD was stroke only with "growth to raster" built in, but never taken to full production.

Honeywell developed an Infra-Red system with Kollsman which gave night vision through the HUD. The HUD was a full raster/cursive capable unit and this system was an option on Gulfstream. It was called EVS Enhanced Visual System.

This Overhead Unit is from the 2020 Civil HUD system and has a Honeywell Part No 702-3170-903 and the same serial number as above.
