The Company Research Laboratory (FARL) developed the Automatic Map Reader which was further developed by Instrument Systems Division (ISD) before being put into production by Marconi Avionics Inc in Atlanta. It was intended to be sold for use in the smaller helicopters that would not be fitted with the expensive DECCA equipment. The unit employs an Intel 4004 microprocessor and at the time code corrections were made using paper tape.
