The range of an ammeter can be extended by connecting a low resistance, called shunt, connected in parallel with ammeter. So, the current will be distributed between the two branches in such away that an appropriate (i.e., safe) amount would go through the ammeter, and the over range (i.e., extra)current would be bypassed through the shunt resistance. This Resistance Range Extension Unit is for the AVO Model 8 Universal Avometer, low and high ranges, 0-2.5 ohm and 0-200 Megohm respectively It was made by the Automatic Coil Winder and Electrical Equipment Co. Ltd. better known as AVO.
