The Night Owl™ Night Vision System was developed primarily for helicopter use. The Goggles consist of two identical channels, each channel comprising an objective lens, image intensifier (Generation 2 or 3) and an eyepiece assembly. The two channels interface with a cross-slide assembly which ensures correct orientation of the channels and also provides interpupillary and tilt adjustment. The cross-slide assembly interfaces with the helmet mount which provides the fore/aft adjustment flip up capability and vertical adjustment. Incorporated within the helmet mount is the power source of two batteries and a three position switch to select power on/off and standby.
The large (25mm) eye relief allows excellent peripheral vision and good ‘look under’ capability for look around monitoring. The unit weight is about 700gms and this set of NVG is on an Alpha Helmet with model binocular Ground Owl™ Goggles. It is not believed that there were any sales of this version.
The design originated with Ferranti and in turn that work derives from work done at the RAE.
A full specification will be found in the brochures D0032.
