This design is yet another invention of Stafford Ellis who had the idea of integrating the new Image Intensifier devices into an optical system. The Image Intensifiers will amplify from starlight levels to a visible level albeit on these early versions giving a rather grainy green picture. The image was projected down through an optical system similar to a Head Up Display such that it could be overlaid on a direct view of the world. This concept was developed into the highly successful "Cats Eyes™" NVG sold to the US Marine Corps. This early version, of about 1970, was rather heavy but was flown with a mechanical Head Tracker by D.J.Sowler in a helicopter.
