The Jianjiji-8 is a delta wing single seat air superiority fighter with a secondary ground attack capability. The design has its origins in the Mig-21.
Development had started in 1964 by the Shenyang Aircraft Company and production ended in 1987. It was under the Peace Pearl programme that the J-8 II aircraft was to be upgraded with Western avionics under a US sponsored programme run through Grumman. This programme was embargoed by the USA in 1989 and cancelled by China in the mid 1990. An alternative domestic (F-8 IIM) upgrade was then commenced. In 1988 the Company supplied four Head Up Display systems for this aircraft (F-8 IIA) based on the F-16A/B design but with a modified Up Front Control Panel. Interestingly these UFCPs were marked in English.
