This is a Power Supply for running the Gyros during testing of NCS1 The unit operates from mains power (230Vac or 115Vac) to permit bench testing away from the ship’s power supplies. The tests it provides are very basic; they test the heater thermostats (NCS1) and spin the wheel at low speed to exercise the bearings.
The Front Panel has a change-over switch to select an Arma Brown Gyro or the NCS1. The Arma Brown Gyro was developed originally by the US Bosch Arma Corporation but was developed as a joint venture gyroscope in the UK by S G Brown at Watford or Chiswick. The Arma Brown Gyro is used in the Arma Brown North-seeking system and is basically the same as the NCS1 gyro, but doesn't have a built in heater and associated thermostats.
(From about 1950 to 1964 the American Bosch Arma Corporation developed a two-degree-of-freedom flotation gyroscope which was generally used as a precision displacement gyroscope. This gyro has the unusual, if not unique, feature that it is a floating two-degree-of-freedom gyro supported at neutral buoyancy free of mechanical gimbal pivots or ball-bearings.)
The manufacturer was found by searching for the CAGE code associated with the Part No. (its NATO Stock No.).
