This is a Pre-Production, Battery Charger Unit used in the NCS1 Electronics Pack [EP]. A 24V Lead Acid Battery is located in the Tray at the bottom of the EP; later units had Silver Calcium alloy batteries fitted which give a longer life.
The battery is used initially to start the NCS1 system but, if the main supply is lost, the Battery Charger logic enables the NCS1 to run from the battery for up to 30 minutes. If the supply is restored within this period the system will revert to the main supply, otherwise it will shut-down.
The date of manufacture is noted as 1976 as ‘76’ is the Serial Number prefix, which is a common practice and certainly within the production span of NCS1.
Although the Identification Label states that the manufacturer was Elliotts this object was made when the Company was called Marconi-Elliott Avionic Systems Ltd and this is the name used on the similar item held as C1135.
