NotesIt was important to record the displays for subsequent analysis at the sortie debrief. The Direct Data Video Recorder or DDVR was an excellent debriefing aid. The onboard recording system captured the output from the EHDD, TV Tab 1, TV Tab 2, the HUD, and the RHWR. Each could be individually displayed at full size or on a composite screen showing all five displays simultaneously. The cockpit voice track was captured and could be backed up by the cockpit voice recorder cassette. When coupled with system time it was possible to reconstruct engagements in precise detail and missile and gun shots could be assessed accurately. The DDVR uses a video recorder's bandwidth utilised bulk digital data recording, possibly for on-aircraft system development. The recording medium was the ‘Phillips 2000’ protocol, which meant that all the replay equipment had to be procured specifically and was almost exclusive to the Tornado F3. The year for this item arises from the "1985" in its various part numbers. The CAGE code K0662 refers to the South Gyle and Crewe Toll sites in Edinburgh which, in 1985, were occupied by Ferranti.
