Newman

This is a type of Abney level, which was for surveying, invented by (Sir) William de Wiveleslie Abney (1843-1920) in 1870. He had entered the Royal Engineers in 1861. He later became an education official and better known for his work on the chemistry of photography. Knighted in 1900.

The instruments bears a makers name of W. Newman & Co Ltd of 4, Dalhousie Square , Calcutta. This company had a very wide range of products such as:-

publications: printing; book-binding, stationery, artists materials,  surveying and mathematical instruments ; optical instruments....

Of the instruments these included:- Theodolites, improved Abney level, binoculars, opera glasses, clinometers...
