Ferranti Defence Systems

Ferranti Defence Systems was formed in the restructuring in 1984 and developed many important avionic systems; the Eurofighter Radar was one of the later programmes.  However the unfortunate involvement of the parent group in the ISC (See Ferranti) group acquisition brought this company down with it. Ferranti Defence Systems was acquired by GEC-Marconi out of administration and renamed GEC Ferranti, later becoming part of GEC Marconi Avionics (GMAv). This business was acquired in 2000 by BAE Systems (BAE Systems Avionics). Part of this business, including the heritage Ferranti operation, was acquired by Finmeccanica in 2007 and renamed SELEX Galileo (now Selex ES). At one time there were design offices at Silverknowes, Robertson Avenue, South Gyle, Crewe Toll, Granton. After BAE Systems was formed the remaining factories at South Gyle were sold off and the staff made redundant.
